TroyBoi and Fabian Mazur bring back the raw energy of trap with ‘Shoulder Lean’
The two producers join forces for a new release on Ultra Records, bringing heavy basslines, syncopated rhythms and the unmistakable energy of old-school trap back into focus.
While much of electronic music seems increasingly obsessed with pushing BPMs higher, TroyBoi and Fabian Mazur are heading in the opposite direction. Their latest collaboration, ‘Shoulder Lean’, released on October 9 via Ultra Records, returns to the foundations of trap: slow rhythms, chest-rattling bass and enough space between each beat to let the groove do the talking.
The result is a dark, minimal and unapologetically heavy production. Rather than relying on the overcrowded arrangements often heard across today’s biggest festival stages, ‘Shoulder Lean’ builds its identity around a powerful drop, deep sub-bass frequencies and a half-time rhythm that recalls the early days of festival trap.
The collaboration also brings together two distinct approaches to production. TroyBoi delivers his signature syncopated patterns, unpredictable rhythms and unmistakable sonic identity, while Fabian Mazur adds his precision in sound design. Together, they create a track where every element has room to breathe, allowing the weight of the production to speak for itself.
The power of low frequencies
For TroyBoi, ‘Shoulder Lean’ marks a return to the more instrumental side of his sound. The release follows his recent seven-track FT EP, also released through Ultra Records, which explored collaborations with vocalists including Daya, Morray and Rockie Fresh.
This time, vocals take a back seat as the production moves firmly into the spotlight. There are no unnecessary layers or elaborate musical detours. Instead, the track finds its strength in the interplay between rhythm, silence and low-end frequencies, building tension through restraint rather than excess.
Even before its official release, ‘Shoulder Lean’ had already made its way onto major festival stages. Zedd was among its early supporters, dropping the track during his performance at Zedd In The Park and giving the collaboration an early introduction to the international festival circuit.
Two producers, one musical vision
Born in London, TroyBoi has spent more than a decade developing a musical identity that refuses to sit comfortably within a single genre. His approach to trap draws from hip hop, electronic music and a wide range of rhythmic influences, something reflected throughout projects such as Left Is Right, his V!BEZ EP series and INFLUENDO, which explored his connection to Latin-inspired sounds.
His career has also included collaborations with Justin Bieber and productions featured in Rihanna’s projects, while his remix of Billie Eilish has accumulated more than 111 million Spotify streams, according to his official biography.
Fabian Mazur, meanwhile, has built a career that extends beyond his own releases. The Copenhagen-based producer, vocalist and sound designer has amassed more than 200 million streams across digital platforms while developing over 40 sample packs and contributing to the creative tools used by producers around the world. His versatility and technical approach have made him a recognised figure both behind the scenes and within the wider electronic music community.
With ‘Shoulder Lean’, the two producers find common ground in the fundamentals of trap. At a time when speed has become something of an obsession across certain corners of electronic music, TroyBoi and Fabian Mazur offer a reminder that intensity doesn’t necessarily come from pushing the tempo.
Sometimes, all it takes is a heavy bassline and the confidence to let it breathe.
‘Shoulder Lean’ is out now via Ultra Records and available across all major streaming platforms.
