Get to know: ANII
Pushing boundaries in electronic music with global collaborations and new horizons
I recently had the chance to sit down with ANII, a rising star in the electronic music world, to talk about her latest projects and the journey she’s been on as an artist. Our conversation ranged from her new track, an ambitious reimagining of the iconic "Somebody That I Used to Know," to her growing presence in Asia and South America.
REIMAGINING A CLASSIC: "SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW"
ANII started off by sharing the story behind her latest track, a fresh take on Gotye’s "Somebody That I Used to Know." If you know the original, you’ll understand just how bold it is to reinterpret such a beloved song. But for ANII, this project was more than just a cover—it was a passion project.
"The original track has always been one of my favorites," she said.
"There’s so much emotional depth to it. But the real push to create my own version came from my manager, Domenico, who’s also a huge fan of the track. He suggested the idea, and everything just clicked. It was a way for me to blend my style with that raw emotion."
ANII’s version features two Italian vocalists, Pjero and Aurora Blasi, both making their debut in the electronic scene. When I asked about working with them, ANII’s excitement was clear.
"Pjero and Aurora were introduced to me by my manager, and they were just perfect for this track. Their voices captured the intensity of the original, but they also added something fresh. Their energy really guided the direction of the song and allowed me to push the production while staying true to its core feeling."
It was clear that ANII approached this reimagining with a deep respect for the original while also staying true to her own sound.
"The vocals were key, we kept them pretty much intact because they carry so much emotion. But the rest of the production is where I put my own spin on things, making it more reflective of my style. It was all about striking that balance—honoring the original, but making it feel new."
A NEW CHAPTER OF COLLABORATIONS
Something else that’s new for ANII is her recent embrace of collaborations. After years of working solo, she’s started teaming up with other artists, beginning with Alfa Romero. It’s been a big shift for her, but one that’s clearly had a huge impact.
"Collaborating has pushed me out of my comfort zone, but in the best way possible, it’s opened up new creative possibilities and brought fresh perspectives to my work. My first collaboration with Alfa Romero felt so natural—ideas flowed easily, and together we created two beautiful tracks. It’s added so many new layers to my sound, and it’s given me the space to experiment in ways I hadn’t considered before."
She also shared some valuable lessons she’s learned through working with others.
"One thing I didn’t expect was just how important trust and flexibility are in collaborations. You really have to trust your collaborators’ vision while being open to new ideas. The best results come when you find that balance between collaboration and individual creativity. Working with different artists has broadened my own horizons, and it’s made me more adaptable in the studio."
And while ANII wasn’t ready to reveal too much, she did tease more collaborations on the horizon.
"I can’t share too many details yet, but these upcoming projects are going to be really special. I’m working with some incredibly talented people, and they’re pushing me to explore new musical territories I’ve never been to before. I think the results are going to surprise a lot of people."
A Global Journey: Growing in Asia and South America
As our conversation turned to her international career, ANII talked about her growing success in Asia and South America, particularly in China. I was curious about what she thought made her music resonate so deeply in these regions.
"I think it’s the emotional depth and rhythmic complexity in my tracks," she reflected.
"Both Asia and South America have such rich musical cultures, and they really appreciate intricate rhythms and music that moves them emotionally. There’s also something personal for me in these places—I feel a strong connection to the people and their energy, and I think that comes through in my music."
Performing in these regions has clearly had a major influence on ANII’s live sets.
"Playing in Asia and South America has been an incredible experience," she said.
"Both regions are all about vibrant rhythms and high-energy sets, which has pushed me to incorporate more of those elements into my performances. The feedback I get from the crowd is always so intense and positive—it’s definitely shaped how I approach my music on stage."
Looking ahead, ANII is excited to explore more cities and regions, with South America being a major focus.
"I’m really looking forward to playing in places like Buenos Aires and São Paulo, and exploring more of Asia as well. I love diving into new cultures and getting a feel for what each audience responds to. It’s all about creating a connection with the crowd, no matter where I am."
As our conversation wrapped up, it was clear to me that ANII is an artist who’s always looking to evolve. Whether it’s through bold new collaborations or connecting with global audiences, she’s constantly pushing herself to explore new creative spaces. And with so many exciting projects on the horizon, there’s no doubt that ANII is set to make an even bigger impact in the electronic music scene.
For fans, there’s a lot to look forward to—fresh collaborations, groundbreaking new sounds, and performances that promise to be as vibrant and dynamic as the places that inspire her.
Stay tuned—ANII’s journey is just getting started.
