Amsterdam Open Air takes new direction and presents the ultimate festival playground
Amsterdam Open Air (AOA) presents a renewed version of the popular festival on June 3 and 4. AOA has always reflected Amsterdam's nightlife and creative initiatives. In the post corona period, a new field has emerged within which the public has acquired new tastes, expectations and needs. Therefore, AOA has embraced many new initiatives from the city, sought collaboration with different organizations and opted for a lineup that includes many artists who weren’t previously featured at AOA.

"We noticed that visitors want to be stimulated and surprised now more than ever," said Thomas Gurney-Champion, Creative Director of AOA. From this premise, we went brainstorming and completely reimagined AOA." While AOA still celebrates the greatest diversity of music cultures in Amsterdam, innovation was also sought in the collaboration with new creatives. For example, a new identity was created by collaborating with New York artist Johana Kroft. Based on Artificial Intelligence, Kroft created 3D art that forms the foundation for the new visual identity. In addition to the new look and feel, collaboration was sought with Kanaal40, who will be hosting an area with interactive (micro)pop music videos. This year, creative community Heesterveld from Amsterdam Zuid-Oost, as well as Intercell, the underground platform of Tropical Lazerstorm and live radio from Amsterdam Prize 2022 winner Echobox will be involved. In addition to the popular house collective Wavy, Supernature, known for their colorful queer parties, will be there.
Returning parties include hip-hop- and house-oriented Foundation, rave collective Capsule, Vunzige Deuntjes and Fiesta Macumba. Palet hosts the Open Air stage on Sunday.
Line-up
This new approach to AOA also translates into an exciting lineup, giving the festival a fresh new impulse. For example, the large Open Air stage will have multiple ‘faces’, with a more pop-oriented program in the afternoon featuring live acts such as crowd favorite Goldband, Froukje, De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig, Claude and sor. In the evening it will be an electronic paradise with Astra Club (DJ Tennis & Carlita) and KILIMANJARO. In addition, Marlon Hoffstadt, DJ EZ, Philou Louzolo, Elias Mazian, Luuk van Dijk and Bella will also take part.
On other stages, techno is strongly represented with names like Dax J, Blawan, Charlie Sparks, CLTX and Mama Snake. House lovers can indulge in exclusive back 2 back sets by Benny Rodrigues b2b Chris Stussy and Carlos Valdes b2b Steffi. Cinthie will come with a special live set on Saturday and the sets of headliner Enzo Siragusa's and Toman both promise to be a highlight on Sunday. Minimal lovers can dance front right to the tunes of Sonja Moonear, among others. African electronic music will also be well represented by DBN Gogo, Buruntuma, Philou Louzolo, Cincity, among others.
Hip-hop lovers can look forward to performances by Idaly, De Schuurman, Jarreau Vandal and Vunzige Deuntjes Soundsystem.
More Art & Culture
For the first time this year, the public can participate or watch recordings of popular podcasts such as Life Dreamers and Theater of the Sekszusjes. There are also dance workshops and Foundation will host talks on the importance of black culture within electronic music and the history of Afrobeat.
Another first-timer for AOA is the collaboration with Spatial Sound Experience by End of Time, also known as 3D or 8D sound, a whole new way of experiencing music. "We are trying to create the ultimate, interactive playground where you are immersed in a colorful world where discovery and connection with each other is key. We believe that escaping reality encourages us to think more freely and make new connections," stated Thomas Gurney-Champion.
