Lehar! Thanks so much for taking the time to speak to us. How are you?
Thank you for having me! I’m doing very well, feeling inspired and energised. 2024 has been a wonderful year so far.
And how has your 2024 been? What have been the highlights? Any resolutions for the New Year or goals/aims?
2024 has been a very positive and productive year. I’ve been spending a lot of time in the studio, exploring new sonic directions, and pushing boundaries both in my solo projects and with the Multinotes label. A highlight has been welcoming fresh talent to the label—there’s so much innovative music coming our way. For the New Year, my aim is to continue this creative momentum, refine my sound, and keep sharing meaningful music with the world.
Tell us about your musical heritage. What drove you towards electronic music and specifically your end of the dance music spectrum?
Growing up in Venice, I was surrounded by a rich cultural and artistic atmosphere, which deeply influenced me. My love for electronic music started when I attended parties featuring legends like François Kevorkian and Tony Humphries. The emotional power of melodies combined with the rhythm of electronic beats captivated me and led me to discover my own style—a fusion of melodic, atmospheric, and deeply emotive sounds.
Who were your biggest influences and inspirations growing up and even now to this day?
My influences range from the classical music I grew up listening to with my family, to the pioneers of electronic music like Kraftwerk and Laurent Garnier. Today, I’m inspired by artists who are unafraid to innovate, whether it’s within electronic music or other genres. Collaboration with other artists also fuels my creativity.
What is the scene in Italy like compared to when you were younger? Has it changed much and if so for better or worse and how?
The Italian electronic scene has evolved tremendously. When I started, it was more niche and fragmented. Now, it’s much more connected to the global scene, with vibrant festivals, amazing clubs, and a strong community of talented artists. I’d say it has changed for the better—there’s more diversity and support for creative expression.
You head up your own Multinotes label and co-founded Buttress. What is the story behind that and what are you trying to portray through these labels? What’s the ethos?
Multinotes was born out of a desire to create a platform where creativity and collaboration thrive. Along with Musumeci and Olderic, we wanted a label that celebrated timeless music, with no strict genre boundaries. The ethos is about storytelling and emotional connection through sound. With Buttress, we aimed to explore a slightly different sonic landscape, offering more room for experimental and avant-garde expressions.
Also, what advice would you give to young up-and-coming producers wanting to start their own label?
Stay true to your vision and don’t rush the process. Build a strong network of like-minded collaborators and be prepared to invest time and energy into nurturing the label. Most importantly, ensure the music you release represents your artistic values.
You are playing Thuishaven in Amsterdam on 14th December? Are you excited? What energy will you bring?
Absolutely, I’m very excited! Thuishaven has such a unique vibe. Amsterdam is one of my favourite cities, so there’s nothing more I could ask for.
Have you played many Dutch gigs before? If so, what do you think of our vibe?
Yes, I’ve had the privilege of playing in the Netherlands several times, including at ADE every year for almost 10 years, and I absolutely love the energy of Dutch crowds. There’s a genuine appreciation for music and a willingness to embrace new sounds, which makes performing here very special.
What has been your favourite gig to play so far in your career?
It’s hard to pick just one! Playing at big festivals such as Tomorrowland, Untold Festival, and Gem Festival is always an amazing experience—the energy and scale are incredible. But I also cherish intimate gigs where I can connect more closely with the audience.
What would be your dream gig? (Aside from Thuishaven ;))
A dream gig would be to perform in a truly unique location, like a remote island or deep in the Dolomites, surrounded by nature. I think that kind of setting would create an extraordinary connection between the music and the environment.
What do you do to relax outside of DJing and producing?
Spending time with family and close friends is my go-to way to relax. I also enjoy exploring nature, whether it’s hiking or just walking by the sea. I love playing tennis every day when I can.
What music do you listen to outside of the dance music spectrum?
I listen to a lot of jazz and ambient music. These genres help me stay balanced and often inspire my own productions in unexpected ways.
What was the last record that blew you away?
"Soft Care" by Dodi Palese is a perfect blend of innovative and old-school sounds!
